Two and Three Dimensional Shapes

For the next 2 weeks, we will be learning about two and three dimensional shapes in math.   Students need to be familiar with and able to recognize the following:
    • polygon  - a closed figure made up of line segments
    • triangle - a polygon with 3 sides
    • quadrilateral - a polygon with 4 sides
    • trapezoid - a quadrilateral with 1 set of parallel sides
    • parallelogram - a quadrilateral with 2 sets of parallel sides
    • rhombus - a parallelogram with all 4 sides the same length
    • rectangle - a parallelogram with 4 right angles
    • square - a parallelogram with 4 right angles and 4 sides the same length
    • pentagon - a polygon with 5 sides
    • hexagon - a polygon with 6 sides
    • octagon - a polygon with 8 sides
    • regular polygon - a polygon with all sides the same length and all angles the same measure
    • sphere - the set of all points in space that are a given distance from a fixed point
    • cone - a three-dimensional figure that has a circular base and a surface from the boundary of the base to the vertex
    • cylinder - a three dimensional figure with 2 congruent parallel bases in the shape of a circle and the cylindrical surface connecting the two bases
    • prism - a three-dimensional figure with 2 parallel congruent bases and rectangles or parallelograms for faces - the bases of a prism can be any polygon, and this base names the prism
    • cube - a rectangular prism in which every face is a square and every edge is the same length
    • pyramid - a three-dimensional figure whose base can be any polygon and whose faces are triangles - the point at which the faces meet is called the vertex and the base names the pyramid

    Multiplication

Last semester in math, students learned to solve multiplication problems conceptually through the use of pictures.  Now we are working on memorizing multiplication facts through 12X12.  Here are some resources to help your child learn these multiplication facts.  Fourth grade teachers will except students to have these facts memorized by the time they enter fourth grade next year.

    Multiplication Flash Cards
    Multiplication.com
Grand Prix Multiplication - Racing Game

    Virtual Manipulatives

This website has virtual base 10 blocks that students can use to solve math problems.  Base 10 blocks are a great resource for students struggling with a variety of math concepts including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
