Telling Time

This week in math, we are working on telling time.  Students should be able to tell and write the time shown on digital and analog clocks.  Students should also be able to use words like "quarter to, quarter past, and half past" to describe the time.  Also, be sure your child understands that the hour hands gradually moves closer to the next hour as the minute hand moves around the clock.  If the hour hand has not gotten to the next number yet, remind your child to go back to the previous number.  This is often where students make mistakes when telling time.  Here are some resources to help your child practice these skills at home.

Higher Order Thinking Questions

Our 4th 6 weeks math CBA will be next week.  Here are the Higher Order Thinking Questions over the concepts we have covered this 6 weeks.  These are great problems to review with your child to help him or her prepare for the test.

Many students are still struggling with regrouping in subtraction.  Here is a website to help students understand exactly what is happening when we regroup during subtracting.  This will help them gain a better understanding of when and how to borrow.  In 3rd grade, students need to be able to subtract using numbers up to 999.

Congruent Figures

This week, we are learning about congruent figures.  Two figures are congruent if they are exactly the same shape and exactly the same size.  It does not matter if the figure is turned a different direction.  It is still congruent with another shape as long as it is exactly the same size and shape as the other figure.  Here are some sample questions and games to help students learn more about congruent figures.

Main Idea and Supporting Details

We have been using this graphic organizer in class to help students grasp the concept of the main idea.  Students have to be able to locate supporting details to prove the main idea.  If they are unable to find any supporting details, then they probably have not correctly identified the main idea.  As your child reads at home, ask them to find the main idea of a paragraph or a book.  Be sure to have them locate supporting details.
